6 Days Rongai Route – Quiet Kilimanjaro Climb from the Northern Side

The 6 Days Rongai Route offers a unique and less crowded way to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, approaching from the remote northern side near the Kenyan border.

This route is known for its dry climate, gradual ascent, and peaceful trails, making it ideal for climbers seeking a quieter experience with solid chances of reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Although shorter than the 7-day version, this itinerary still provides good acclimatization and an incredible journey through diverse landscapes.

Why Choose the 6 Days Rongai Route?

This route is perfect for travelers looking for a balance between time and success:

  • Less crowded and more remote trail
  • Gradual ascent profile suitable for many climbers
  • Drier conditions compared to southern routes
  • Shorter duration for time-conscious trekkers
  • Scenic views and unique northern approach

Day by Day Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp

Your journey begins with a drive from Moshi or Arusha to Rongai Gate for registration. The trek starts through farmland and forest, where you may spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys.

The trail gradually ascends to Simba Camp, where you will enjoy dinner and your first overnight stay on the mountain.

Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp

Continue trekking through moorland terrain with wide-open views of the surrounding landscape. The trail is steady and less steep, making for a comfortable hiking day.

Arrive at Second Cave Camp, where you will relax, have dinner, and overnight at camp.

Day 3: Second Cave Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Today’s trek takes you through rolling hills and scenic valleys as you gain altitude. The vegetation becomes sparse, and the air cooler.

Arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located beneath the dramatic Mawenzi Peak, offering one of the most scenic camping spots on Kilimanjaro.

Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut

Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, trekking through an alpine desert landscape. The terrain is vast, quiet, and otherworldly.

Arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon, rest, and prepare for your summit attempt with an early dinner and sleep.

Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Begin your summit attempt around midnight, trekking slowly toward Gilman’s Point and then onward to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Witness a breathtaking sunrise from the summit.

After celebrating your achievement, descend to Horombo Hut for overnight. This is the most physically demanding day of the trek.

Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Descend through moorland and rainforest zones back to Marangu Gate. Enjoy the changing scenery and reflect on your achievement.

Receive your summit certificate before transferring back to Moshi or Arusha, marking the end of your 6 Days Rongai Route adventure.
