The Rongai Route stands out for its remote beauty, peaceful trekking environment, and spectacular summit views from the northern approach.
Day by Day Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
Your adventure begins with a drive to Rongai Gate near the Kenyan border. After registration, start trekking through farmland and forest zones where you may spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys.
The trail gradually ascends to Simba Camp, where you will enjoy dinner and your first overnight stay on the mountain.
Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave Camp
Continue your trek through moorland terrain with increasingly open views of the surrounding landscapes. The trail is steady and less steep, allowing for comfortable hiking.
Arrive at Second Cave Camp, where you will rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the next stage of your climb.
Day 3: Second Cave Camp to Kikelewa Camp
Today’s trek takes you through rolling hills and scenic valleys as you gain altitude. The vegetation becomes thinner, and the air cooler.
Arrive at Kikelewa Camp, located in a sheltered valley, where you will relax and spend the night.
Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Climb steadily toward Mawenzi Tarn, one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro, located beneath the dramatic peaks of Mawenzi.
Spend the afternoon acclimatizing and exploring the area. The views here are breathtaking, making it a highlight of the Rongai Route.
Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut
Cross the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, trekking through an alpine desert landscape. The terrain is vast and otherworldly.
Arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon, rest, and prepare for the summit attempt with an early dinner and sleep.
Day 6: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
Begin your summit attempt around midnight, climbing slowly toward Gilman’s Point and then to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Experience a spectacular sunrise above the clouds.
After celebrating at the summit, descend to Horombo Hut for overnight. This is the most challenging yet rewarding day of your journey.
Day 7: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Descend through moorland and rainforest zones back to Marangu Gate. Enjoy the changing scenery and reflect on your successful climb.
Receive your summit certificate before transferring back to Moshi or Arusha, marking the end of your 7 Days Rongai Route adventure.
