The 8 Days Lemosho Route is widely considered the best route to climb Mount Kilimanjaro thanks to its excellent acclimatization profile, breathtaking scenery, and high summit success rate. Starting on the western side of the mountain, this route offers a quieter and more scenic approach compared to others.
Over eight days, you will trek through lush rainforest, expansive moorlands, the stunning Shira Plateau, and alpine desert before reaching the snow-capped summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895m). This extended itinerary allows your body to adjust properly to altitude, making it ideal for both first-time climbers and experienced trekkers.
Why Choose the 8 Days Lemosho Route?
The Lemosho Route is one of the most recommended Kilimanjaro routes:
- High summit success rate due to excellent acclimatization
- Less crowded at the start compared to Machame and Marangu
- Incredible scenic variety from rainforest to glaciers
- Gradual ascent profile for better altitude adaptation
- Ideal for beginners with good fitness and experienced hikers
Lemosho Route Highlights
The Lemosho Route offers some of the most diverse and beautiful scenery on Kilimanjaro, including remote rainforest trails, wide-open plateaus, dramatic valleys, and the iconic summit glaciers.
Day by Day Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Your journey begins with a drive from Moshi or Arusha to Lemosho Gate for registration. Start trekking through dense rainforest, home to monkeys, birds, and rich vegetation.
The trail is gentle and peaceful, leading to Mti Mkubwa Camp, where you will enjoy dinner and your first night on the mountain.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Continue trekking through the forest as it gradually thins out, transitioning into moorland terrain.
Climb steadily to Shira 1 Camp, where the landscape opens up to reveal expansive views of the Shira Plateau. Enjoy dinner and overnight with spectacular scenery.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
This is a shorter and relatively easy day, allowing for acclimatization. Trek across the Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus in the world.
Enjoy panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro and surrounding landscapes. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp for rest and overnight.
Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Climb to Lava Tower at higher altitude for acclimatization before descending to Barranco Camp.
This “climb high, sleep low” strategy improves your body’s adaptation to altitude. Enjoy dramatic views and camp beneath the impressive Barranco Wall.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical scramble with rewarding views.
Continue trekking through valleys and ridges to Karanga Camp. This is a shorter day, allowing more time for acclimatization and rest.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Ascend gradually to Barafu Camp, your base camp for the summit attempt. The landscape becomes rocky and barren, typical of the alpine desert zone.
Arrive early to rest, have dinner, and prepare for the midnight summit climb.
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Begin your summit attempt around midnight, trekking under the stars to Stella Point and then onward to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Witness a breathtaking sunrise from the summit.
After celebrating, descend to Barafu Camp briefly and continue down to Mweka Camp for overnight. This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the climb.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Enjoy the changing scenery and reflect on your incredible journey.
Receive your summit certificate before transferring back to Moshi or Arusha, marking the successful completion of your 8 Days Lemosho Route climb.
