The 5-day Marangu Route is the fastest itinerary to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” it’s the only path that offers hut accommodations along the way. Though it’s the least physically demanding in terms of terrain, the short acclimatization period makes it more challenging in terms of altitude adaptation. This route ascends and descends along the same trail, moving through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit zones.

Start your climb with registration at Marangu Gate, followed by a hike through thick rainforest. You’ll trek under the canopy of trees, possibly spotting colobus monkeys and colorful birdlife. Your first overnight stop is Mandara Hut, a set of wooden A-frame huts nestled in the forest.

Today’s hike crosses the Saddle, a vast high-altitude desert located between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. The air gets thinner as you ascend to Kibo Hut, your base for the summit attempt. You’ll eat an early dinner and rest before beginning the midnight summit climb.

Your summit attempt begins just after midnight. The trail is steep and cold as you ascend to Gillman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim, then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement and taking photos, you’ll descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, and then continue down to Horombo Hut for the night.
