Day by Day Tour Itinerary:

Machame Route Scenery

The Machame Route is famous for its incredible scenery. From dense rainforest filled with wildlife to open alpine deserts and glacial summit views, every day offers a completely different landscape and unforgettable photography opportunities.

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Your adventure begins with a drive from Moshi or Arusha to Machame Gate, where registration takes place. Start your trek through lush rainforest filled with giant trees, ferns, and possible sightings of monkeys and birds.

The trail gradually ascends, becoming steeper as you approach Machame Camp. Arrive in the afternoon, enjoy dinner, and settle in for your first night on the mountain surrounded by forest sounds.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone, where vegetation becomes smaller and the landscape opens up. The trail climbs steadily with beautiful views of the Shira Plateau and Mount Kilimanjaro.

Arrive at Shira Camp in the afternoon, where you can enjoy stunning views of the mountain and surrounding plains. Rest, acclimatize, and prepare for higher altitudes ahead.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

This is a key acclimatization day. Trek towards Lava Tower, gaining altitude before descending to Barranco Camp. The “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adapt to the altitude.

Enjoy dramatic views of Kilimanjaro’s southern face and unique landscapes. Descend into the Barranco Valley, where the camp is located beneath the famous Barranco Wall.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Start the day by climbing the Barranco Wall, a thrilling but non-technical scramble offering incredible views. Once at the top, the trail continues through valleys and ridges toward Karanga Camp.

This shorter trekking day allows for further acclimatization. Spend the afternoon resting and preparing for the summit push ahead.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Ascend gradually to Barafu Camp, located on a rocky alpine desert landscape. This is your base camp for the summit attempt.

Arrive early to rest, have an early dinner, and prepare your gear for the midnight summit climb. Sleep early as you will begin the most challenging part of the trek during the night.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Begin your summit attempt around midnight, trekking under the stars toward Stella Point and then onward to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Witness a breathtaking sunrise over the continent from the summit.

After celebrating your achievement, descend back to Barafu Camp for rest and then continue down to Mweka Camp. This is a long and physically demanding day, but incredibly rewarding.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

On your final day, descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. Enjoy the lush scenery and reflect on your incredible journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.

At the gate, receive your summit certificate before transferring back to Moshi or Arusha, marking the end of your 7 Days Machame Route adventure.
