The 6 Days Marangu Route is one of the most popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, offering a more comfortable trekking experience with hut accommodation instead of camping. Often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it is known for its gradual ascent and well-established paths.
This route takes you through lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and finally to the snow-covered summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The 6-day version includes an extra acclimatization day, increasing your chances of successfully reaching the summit.
Why Choose the 6 Days Marangu Route?
The Marangu Route is ideal for climbers who prefer comfort and a steady climb:
- Hut accommodation instead of camping (beds, dining huts)
- Gradual ascent profile suitable for beginners
- Extra acclimatization day improves summit success rate
- Well-established trail with clear paths
- Ideal for first-time climbers and those seeking comfort
Marangu Route Highlights
The Marangu Route offers a unique trekking experience with comfortable huts and diverse landscapes, from lush rainforest to the stark beauty of the alpine desert and icy summit.
Day by Day Tour Itinerary:
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Your journey begins with a drive from Moshi or Arusha to Marangu Gate for registration. Trek through dense rainforest filled with towering trees, birds, and monkeys.
Arrive at Mandara Hut in the afternoon, where you will enjoy dinner and your first overnight stay in mountain huts.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone, where the landscape opens up with views of Kilimanjaro’s peaks.
Trek steadily to Horombo Hut, enjoying scenic views along the way. Arrive in the afternoon for rest, dinner, and overnight stay.
Day 3: Horombo Hut – Acclimatization Day
Spend the day at Horombo Hut for acclimatization. You can take a short hike to higher altitude areas before returning to camp.
This important day helps your body adjust to altitude, increasing your chances of reaching the summit successfully.
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Continue your trek through alpine desert terrain toward Kibo Hut. The landscape becomes more barren, with fewer plants and dramatic volcanic scenery.
Arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon, rest, and prepare for the summit attempt. Have an early dinner and sleep before the midnight climb.
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
Begin your summit attempt around midnight, trekking toward Gilman’s Point and then to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Witness an unforgettable sunrise from the summit.
After celebrating your achievement, descend back to Horombo Hut for overnight. This is the longest and most challenging day of the trek.
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Descend through moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. Enjoy the changing scenery and reflect on your incredible journey.
Receive your summit certificate before transferring back to Moshi or Arusha, marking the end of your 6 Days Marangu Route adventure.
